 This is La Grande Place or "The Big Place" (okay, actually it means "The Great Square" but isn't French funny?) in Brussels. It's the central square where City Hall and such is--lots of old, gilt buildings. In the middle of the square is a flower market, where the nice lady on the right and I chatted about how the flowers are a nice constrast to the buildings. Don't you think so?

At left, I'm standing in front of the "Manneken Pis," Brussel's mascot. They make quite a big deal of the little guy, dressing him up in different clothes and whatnot. There's even a very gaudy, Flash-laden mannekin-pis.com run by "L'ordre des amis de Manneken-Pis," or "The order of Friends of the Manneken-Pis"!
 The picture on the right needs some explanation. I was walking down the street trying to find something or other when a long train of people dressed in black started dancing around and chanting. When I came by the same square a bit later, it looked like they were putting on some kind of a show for the tourists...a bit odd, but hey it beats those "mechanical people" you see everywhere! |
